What to Look For When Buying a Generator

!±8± What to Look For When Buying a Generator

Generator size based on your needs

There are a number of important things to consider when buying a new or used generator so you get a cost effective solution for your needs. The most important thing to look at is the size of the generator based on your needs. After you have assessed your requirements, the size of the generator can be determined, the fuel source, warranty and the all important maintenance requirements and costs.

So, start your search for a new or used generator by assessing exactly what you want the generator to power. Do you want a standby generator that will automatically kick in when the power goes off, and switch off by itself when the power comes back on? If so you will be looking at a permanent generator. If you want a backup power supply for only a few electrical appliances, then a smaller, portable generator may be what you require.

The first step to determine the size of the generator you require is to calculate the wattage of all the items that will be powered at the same time. Then increase that total by 20 percent to cover the initial power surge. Calculating wattage requirements will require you either check the manual that came with the appliance, any indication on the appliance itself, or check the net. If you have any difficulty, you could get an electrician to test the item and give you an accurate wattage figure.

Generator fuel type

Based on the results, you now have a good idea of the size of the generator you need. The hardest work is over. Now determine what sort of fuel source you want. If you are looking for a large permanent generator, they normally use either propane gas or natural gas, as that fuel source can be stored for longer periods than petrol or diesel. You can leave it ready to be used when ever the power goes off, whereas petrol does go off after a while. Portable generators usually use petrol or diesel as that is a cheaper fuel source and in most cases, easier to use.

Generator Maintenance

Next consider maintenance costs. Check out any user reviews regarding reliability and problems they have had. Also, if you can talk to mechanics that service generators, get their opinion. This should give you a fair idea of generators to avoid. Remember that if the motor is from a reputable brand such as Yamaha or Honda, you have a good guarantee of reliability.

Generator Warranty

Finally check out any warranty that comes with the generator and compare. These are some of the important things to look for when you are buying a new or used generator.

Chainsaw Carving - Oak Log Bench Woodworking Project

My next woodworking, or rather 'Chainsaw Carving' project: Making a log bench was next on my 'to-do' list. I had reserved two Oak logs for this project. Since I rarely get my hands on large logs I was forced to make the bench in pieces, bolting them together with stainless steel rods. An advantage is that the bench can be fully dismantled if you want to relocate it. The bad side is that you have A lot of individual pieces that you need to precise fit onto each other. The wood was still fairy green, so you had to take warping and shrinking into account as well. That took huge amounts of time (and frustration). Despite the troubles I am happy with the result. The color the Tung oil gives the wood is incredible and that moment made up for most of the frustrations. And to be fair, I again learned a lot of new techniques like burning lines with the angle grinder and steel cutting disks. Let me know what you think of it. This bench was made in Hortus Haren, Netherlands. Chain Saw Chain Maintenance Tips

!±8± Chain Saw Chain Maintenance Tips

The chainsaw chain is the most important part of a chain saw. Replacement and proper maintenance of the chain will help keep the saw running and working the way it is intended to work. Good upkeep of the saw chain will also help keep you safe while using this dangerous power tool. Always make sure that your chain is clean, properly sharpened, stays oiled and has the right tension during each use.

It can be very easy to sharpen your own chain saw chain if you know what you are doing. If you decide to sharpen the chain yourself, make sure that you sharpen both the left and the right cutting blades equally. Always inspect the chain for damaged or broken links when preforming maintenance and before each use. Dull teeth and defects can be very dangerous because they both can induce chainsaw kickback which is the number one cause of chainsaw injuries.

It is really easy to clean your chainsaw chain. If you have an electric saw, make sure that you disconnect the saw from any source of power to prevent the chance of accidentally running the saw. Loosen the chain to the point that you can easily remove it from the guide bar. Once the chain is removed from the saw, it will need to soak in some household cleaner mixed with water. After soaking, use a soft brush and gently scrub the entire saw chain.

When you get done cleaning the chain it should be clean and free of grease and dirt. Dry it off thoroughly so that there is no water left on it to prevent rust from forming. Apply chain oil to the chain after any repairs or sharpening have been completed.

The wrong amount of tension on a chainsaw chain will cause your saw to run and cut inefficiently, as well as put your safety at risk. Too much tension on the chain will increase the wear on the bar and the chain, which will cause you to replace them much sooner than normal. It should fit tight enough so that it lays snug against the bar but should also spin freely when you move it with your glove covered hand.

Check frequently to make sure your chain remains properly tightened. New chains will stretch after use unless it's a pre-stretched one. If your chain is too loose, it can cause it to fall off of the bar or bind in the wood during a cut.

The majority of chainsaw chains [http://www.poulansawchain.com] that are being made are self oiling. Oil that is released from the bars reservoir keeps the chain well lubricated. A properly oiled chain will have less heat and friction between the bar and chain. Less friction will allow the blade to cut evenly and spin freely.

Correct chainsaw chain maintenance is a very important part of saw operation. These tips will not only help your chain and saw last longer and run more efficient, they will also keep you safe and injury free while operating this very dangerous tool.

Chainsaw Sharpening Guide - Maintain Your Chainsaw for Peak Performance

!±8± Chainsaw Sharpening Guide - Maintain Your Chainsaw for Peak Performance

Your chainsaw is a useful tool around the garden, but only when it is kept in tip-top condition. As with any garden tool, regular maintenance of your saw, including chainsaw sharpening, is vital. Sharpening a chainsaw can be done at home using a simple, readily-available chainsaw sharpening kit costing just a few pounds.

Why chainsaw sharpening is important

Sharpening a chainsaw is essential for its efficient, safe operation. A blunt chainsaw is an inefficient tool - it won't cut effectively and it will take a lot more effort to get the cuts you want. Professionals pride themselves on maintaining their saw for peak performance and so should you - hence this chainsaw sharpening guide.

How can you tell if sharpening is needed?

Professionals recommend two simple checks for the condition and sharpness of your chainsaw chain. First of all, there's the self-feed test: blunt chains won't self-feed and will have to be actively 'pushed' into the wood. Secondly, look for telltale small wood chips that resemble sawdust. (rather than the chunky woodchips associated with a sharp chain). If either applies, it's time to sharpen the chainsaw chain.

How to sharpen a chainsaw

Chainsaw sharpening, while time-consuming and fiddly, can be done at home using a readily available kit. Many professionals also recommend the use of a suitable resin solvent to help maintain the life and performance of the chain. Typically, the kit for sharpening a chainsaw includes the following:

A chainsaw file gauge A round chainsaw file A flat file for the depth gauge on the chain's teeth.

Sharpening the chain involves cleaning the chain with a stiff brush, then systematically filing the top plate, side plate and depth gauge on each of the chain's teeth. Important safety precautions include the following:

Switching the saw off before work Sharpening the saw with the chainsaw engine cold. Wearing safety gloves - protects fingers when sharpening the chainsaw Working on a flat, sturdy, well-lit surface

Is sharpening a chainsaw really a DIY activity?

Chainsaw sharpening is well within the capability of a domestic user, providing you follow the instructions that come with the sharpening kit and apply commonsense safety procedures. If in doubt about your ability as a chainsaw sharpener, you should always seek professional advice and help. Remember too, that the chain isn't the only chainsaw component requiring regular maintenance - other components will also need routine attention.
